Problem

Design a seamless credit card experience within PayPal’s ecosystem while:

  • Aligning with two distinct brand systems (Citi + PayPal)
  • Integrating with existing PayPal post-login flows
  • Supporting end-to-end lifecycle (application → usage → management)

Role & Ownership

  • Led UX design from early concept to high-fidelity delivery
  • Defined end-to-end user journeys across onboarding and card management
  • Collaborated with cross-functional stakeholders across Citi and PayPal
  • Translated ambiguous requirements into structured product flows

Constraints & Challenges

  • No access to PayPal’s internal design system during early stages
  • Required to design within strict brand expectations without formal guidelines
  • Multiple stakeholders across organisations with differing priorities
  • Needed to align Citi’s backend capabilities with PayPal’s UX patterns

Approach

To navigate ambiguity, I reverse-engineered PayPal’s existing product patterns and created low-fidelity flows to validate direction early with stakeholders.

I designed end-to-end user journeys covering:

  • Card application
  • Rewards visibility
  • Transaction tracking
  • Payment flows

These were progressively refined into high-fidelity prototypes, ensuring alignment across both Citi and PayPal teams.

Key Decisions

  • Prioritised familiar PayPal interaction patterns to reduce user learning curve
  • Used progressive disclosure to simplify complex financial data
  • Integrated card features within existing PayPal flows instead of creating parallel experiences
  • Designed for both positive and edge-case scenarios (e.g., failed payments, limits)

Impact

  • Enabled stakeholder alignment across Citi and PayPal for product direction
  • Accelerated transition from concept to high-fidelity design
  • Established a scalable UX foundation for future co-branded integrations
